Welcome to the bumblebee doppelgänger problem. These fuzzy foragers are so nearly identical that scientists invented an entire term—the "Bombus lucorum complex"—to describe three species that look virtually identical to the human eye. Despite the confusion, they're anything but mysterious ecologically: they're widespread throughout Europe and hardy enough to survive as far north as the frozen Barents Sea. In southern Europe, they're upland specialists, retreating to mountainous regions and avoiding warmer lowlands.
